We’re Relocating! Can We Take Our Signs With Us?

Game Chest sign

Dear Sign Lady,

We are finally moving! Our business is expanding to a bigger, better location across town. We spent a lot of money on our custom signs a few years ago and we love them. Can we just take them with us, or are we starting from scratch?

— Moving & Motivated

Dear Moving,

First of all—congratulations! Expanding a business is no small feat, especially in today’s market. To answer your question: The short answer is yes... but the long answer involves a bit of "sign surgery" and some city hall red tape.

Before you grab a ladder and a toolkit, here are the four things you need to consider before moving your "Vibrant Visual Voice" to a new home:

1. The Permit Problem (The "New House, New Rules" Rule)

This is the big one. Just because a sign was legal at your old location doesn't mean it’s legal at the new one. Most municipalities in the South Bay and greater Los Angeles area require a new permit for every new installation—even if it’s the exact same sign.

Each building has its own "sign program" that dictates size, height, and lighting type. If your new landlord or city code is stricter, that old sign might be a "no-go."

2. The "Fit" Factor

Think of your sign like a custom-tailored suit. It was made to fit a specific storefront. When we move a sign, we have to look at:

  • The Wall Surface: Is it stucco? Brick? Metal? The mounting hardware changes based on the building.

  • Electrical: Are the power points in the same spot? You may need an electrician to bring power to the sign location or adjust how the power is setup for the "raceway" (the metal box letters sometimes sit on) to match the new facade.

3. The Condition Check

Signs live outside 24/7. They battle UV rays, wind, and rain. Sometimes, the cost of carefully removing, transporting, and refurbishing an old sign is nearly the same as building a fresh, modern one. If your current sign is starting to show its age, relocation is the perfect time to upgrade to energy-efficient LEDs or those Channel Letters everyone is talking about.

4. Don't DIY the Removal!

I’ve seen it happen too often: a well-meaning business owner tries to "pop" letters off the wall and ends up cracking the acrylic or snapping the neon. Removing a sign without damaging the building’s exterior (which could cost you your security deposit!) or the sign itself requires a professional touch.

The Sign Lady’s Bottom Line:

Moving is stressful enough—don't let your signage be the thing that keeps you up at night. At 3V Signs & Graphics, we specialize in "Sign Relocation." We’ll check the codes for your new spot, handle the permits, and make sure your brand transition is seamless.

Ready to get your new storefront glowing? Give us a call at 310-372-0888 or [fill out our contact form] and we’ll help you decide if your old sign is ready for the move or if it’s time for a brand-new reveal!

Stay Vibrant,

The Sign Lady
